My World of Stories
The Seven Layers of Space has been growing in and around me as far back as the fourth grade, when I created a comic strip called "Gup" starring an alien named G'zort Bleep. He's still around.
Over time I came to see all of my artwork was connecting and evolving into one larger, interwoven world: The Seven Layers of Space.
In short, The Seven Layers of Space are seven worlds stacked one on top of the other, each unique, and none fully aware of the existence of the others. Each Layer possesses individual qualities and is subject to its own set of physical (and magical) laws, some shared, some unique.
Many characters, locations, organizations, and objects appear throughout much of my work. Monsterface Industries, The Magician Detective and his House, The Lava Men, The Sock Puppet Portraits, and much more all interact on one elaborate stage.
It is my hope that this world exists as a detailed back-drop to all of my work, and not a necessary entry point. That is, I want the individual aspects and artworks like The Sock Puppet Portraits or Uncle Monsterface (the band) to be able to function autonomously. However, discerning weird-o's and miscreants can dig deeper and see a wild array of connections. Moreover, I'd like for certain elements to overlap more than others, and some works to tell more inclusive and connective stories about the larger world...
Outside of being a metaphor for my inner world and prismatic brain, I also see this world as a metaphor for the infinite aspects of creativity, imagination, and connection.
The Seven Layers of Space are EARTH, CLANK, SOCK, POW, GUP, THEN, and a mysterious interior Layer known as The Shimmering Place.
The Seven Layers are held together via "The Grid,"an infinite lattice- work that binds everything ever, as maintained by the creatures known as The Ubiquitous Moby. The Moby are shepherded by the Keeper of The Grid, formerly The Bird, currently The Easter Bunny.
Certain characters and creatures known as Travelers can move between Layers, either by manifesting their Power Patterns at a corresponding thru-spot, or gaining access through Sock Puppet City.
Known thru-spots include The House of the Magician Detective and Dino-Skeleton Island.
There is already a history of The Seven Layers, and certain works (notably "Rise of The Lava Men") are historical records, though most works take place during or around events surroundings the precarious transition between the two Keepers of the Grid, The Bird and The Easter Bunny, a noteworthy time of transition and vulnerability.

EARTH: Where we are! (don't tell...)
The World of REALITY, and THE NOW
A land governed by a curious combination of science and mysticism all ordered via an obscure symbolic system of trade called “money”, governed by a mixture of ruling bodies (who are often at war) which correspond to territories.
Populated by: humans and animals and cars
Associated Works: NYC Art Sales, Monsterface Industries
CLANK: Primary home of The House of the Magician Detective.
The World of MAGIC and MACHINES
Inter-dependent cities separated by dangerous less-populated warring “null zones”, traversed largely via enormous airships and super-trains. Full of a mixture of real magic and steam-powered machines. Governed by prophecies for every creature who was born there.
Populated by: humans, their magical creations, and super-natural creatures (ghosts, vampires, werewolves, yeti, magical mutants)
Associated works: Vampire Boy, The Case Files of The Magician Detective, The White Book
SOCK: Where Sock Puppet Portraits call home!
The World of TRANSFORMATION and PLAY
Here (nearly) everyone ever (and others in between) exist as Sock Puppets. Made up primarily of Sock Puppet City, though lesser-known locales include a forgotten underground city and a series of lost islands. Physical laws become more flexible than anywhere else here, and this Layer often functions as a bridge between other layers, though travel is theoretically restricted.
Population: Everyone ever (almost) as sock puppets
Associated works: The Sock Puppet Portraits, Sock Puppet Manor
?: The shimmering place, the unknown, inner-most layer of space
World of MYSTERY and THE UNKNOWN
In the center of the Seven Layers there is a lesser known space. We don’t know very much about this place other than the fact that it exists. Those who do know about it are known to become obsessed...
Associated works: Unknown
POW: Land of infinite heroes
World of FANTASY and POWER
A world where all of its inhabitants have extraordinary abilities and super-powers, derived from a powerful byrpoduct of “The Grid," leading to frequent conflict. Consisting largely of ocean, small islands, and floating “air bases”.
Populated by: superheroes, villains, and adventurers
Associated works: Uncle Monsterface, "Rise of the Lava Men", Team Monsterface and The Seven Layers of Space
GUP: A vast and wondrous untamed wilderness
World of SCIENCE and NATURE
A world of unbridled nature, the Land of Gup was once densely populated by native creatures who, long ago, split into two tribes, half of whom live amongst the trees, known as The Overdwellers, and half of whom live below the ground, known as The Underworlders.
Populated by: wild creatures & plants, Overdwellers, Underdwellers, and two scientists studying it all from the ground
Associated works: OOGLE BOGS, Professor Hero's Old Timey Automatons, The Power Patterns
THEN: The Land that was...
World of FREEDOM and THE PAST
A seemingly endless expanse of open air and floating islands, with no governing force or indigenous humanoids
Populated by: dinosaurs and birds, almost exclusively, though many traveller “ex-pats” settle here.
Associated works: The Case Files of The Magician Detective
The Story So Far...
While nearly all of my work resides in the Seven Layers, certain projects have taken more focussed looks at the world.
Most recently, Monsterface Industries' cartoon show pitch, "Team Monsterface and the Seven Layers of Space," focussed on two kids from Earth interacting with the Seven Layers extensively via Dino-skeleton Island.
Moving forward, over the last several years I have been working on a novel/guidebook that tells a more detailed story from the Seven Layers of Space, called "Theodore and the Seven Layers of Space." Nine of the characters from this story became the Series 4 Sock Puppet Portraits, which was successfully funded on Kickstarter in 2012. I hope to begin releasing chapters from the book in 2017.
