Confession of A Puppet Person Volume 3
Why Sock Puppets Aren’t Just For Kids
Puppets are magic.
Here’s the detailed instructions for the spell: take an inanimate object, and give it life. Try it out – pause for a second and make that stapler dance or that coffee cup search for its mate. This is a mighty power to wield, and guess what: the power of object transformation is for everyone, no matter your age.
So-Called Grown-Ups, Unite
As has been established by several singing frogs and many wonderful friendly monsters before me – puppets are a perfect way to connect to young people. From an early age, we’re inclined to let our walls down and let our imaginations take us places.
But that’s exactly why puppets are wonderful for so-called grown ups, too.
The Doors of (Puppet) Perception
The doors that puppets and puppetry open for young people are the same ones that blast open for adults and include (but are not limited to):
Imagination
Storytelling
Better Listening
A Space for Unstructured Play
By shifting our focus from the day-to-day, our phones, and ourselves, we unlock a new space inside.
Some Suggestions To Get You Started:
Your new puppet friend can host a dinner party. Perhaps they can serve pizza?
Bring your puppet to work day. They are very good at negotiating for raises and better break room snacks, and you definitely won't get fired or ostracized.
Put on a show for your pets. Their confusion and desire to eat your puppet is its own reward.
While we are trying to keep you from your phone, if you must, it is an amazing puppet theater. Make your own cooking/dance/talk show. Count the moments until internet stardom. Then throw your phone in a river.
Have a conversation with a family member ... as a puppet. Watch as a mixture of jokes and surprisingly real emotions evolve.
What are you waiting for? Put a puppet on your hand, you silly grown-up. Let's make some weird magic.
